About BILL
Background & Early Life
Born in Fairbanks and raised in Delta Junction and Valdez, Bill Walker is a lifelong Alaskan whose family helped shape the state during the years leading to Alaska statehood. His father, Ed Walker, served in the Alaska Scouts in the Aleutians during World War II and later owned a construction company and hotel. His mother, Frances Park Walker, came north during the war with the Corps of Engineers working on the construction of the Alcan Highway and later worked as Women’s Page editor for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.
In 1964, the Walker family lost everything in the devastating Alaska Earthquake. As a young boy, Bill went to work alongside his parents and siblings to help save the family construction business during the rebuilding of Valdez. At age 12, he successfully bid on the local post office janitorial contract and worked before and after school while also helping relocate homes to the new post-earthquake townsite.
Walker graduated from Valdez High School in 1969, where he served as Student Body President and played on Valdez Buccaneers basketball team.
